Almost 1 down, 11 to go in 2001 ...
This just in. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones will be doing a few club dates
in February including Lupo's in Providence Thur Feb 22), Toad's in New
Haven (Sat Feb 24) and two shows at the Vanderbilt in Plainville, NY (Thur
Feb 23 & Sun 25). For the Lupo's show, tickets go on sale tomorrow (Jan
26th at 10am) through Ticketmaster outlets or on line (try clicking
https://ticketing.ticketmaster.com/cgi/purchasePage.asp?event_id=1003231F87B
67EF&event_code=ELH0222). Good luck and have fun.
So other big news from the Boston scene include a new album, new tour and
other news about our Irish punk rock kings the Dropkick Murphys
(http://www.dropkickmurphys.com). Their new album "Sing Loud, Sing Proud"
comes out on Hellcat Records on Tuesday, February 6th and they will be
celebrating the release by doing a week of in-store shows around the
Northeast (Boston, Providence, Philly, Washington DC, NYC). But before that
happens, the boys will be doing a live set the Sunday before release
(Sunday, Feb 4th) on the FNX Radio Network's New England Product hosted by
Chris Rucker. That show runs from 9:30 to 11 Sunday night and can be heard
on 101.7FM in Boston, 103.7FM in Providence and southeastern New England,
92.1FM in New Hampshire, and 92.1FM in Maine or online at
http://www.fnxradionetwork.com. As for the in-store appearances, the
first one is on release day (Tuesday, Feb 6) at the new Newbury Comics in
Alewife, Cambridge at 4pm, followed by the Warick, RI Newbury Comics on Wed
and then NJ, PA, DC and NYC (see their website). For all the in-store
shows, the first 50 or 100 people will get a free DKM souvenir with the
purchase of the new Sing Loud, Sing Proud. In other Dropkick news, they
start their US tour March 9th and which brings them to an all ages show at
Avalon in Boston on St. Patrick's day (Sat, March 17) with tickets now on
sale through Next Ticketing outlets or online at
http://www.nextticketing.com/avalon.html. Word is the DKM will be stopping
at the Conan O'Brien show on Friday, March 16th to play a song. More news
on the DKM next week and YES, I know they are not a ska band.
I've had several people ask me about new Boston (Florida transplant) ska
band The Double Deckers. Well, I haven't seen them in a couple years since
I was on tour in Florida, but I will offer this review from John "Ska
Whore" Frazee (X-Allstonians) who was at the Common Ground the other week
playing with Beat Soup and caught the Double Deckers' set. John says "The
Double Deckers hit the stage swinging! I couldn't give you a run down of
the set list that night as I'm still not familiar with their tunes but they
sure grooved me. The band I heard that night had the sound of a refined
ensemble that was there to play and get the people movin' . On talking to
Ben, one of the trumpet players who was gracious enough to come see the
Allstonians at the end of our '99 tour, he informed me that they had moved
in more of a "jazzy" type of direction. Judging from the first time I heard
them, I noticed more of an emphasis on solos and tasty chord progressions
in their songs. I also heard lots of blue beats and up-tempo rocksteady,
along with some amazing high range trumpet playing by Matt, one of their
newest additions. All in all, the Double Deckers have most certainly
progressed in a direction that is both musical and very dance friendly. A
welcome sight and a fine injection the Boston ska scene, go see this
band." I do like their cd, and I like the band, so do support them and go
see their next show.
Skif Dank drummer Marc has been keeping his skills up by playing drums for
ska/punk band The Independents, who you may remember, played the first New
England Ska Festival back in 1997. The Independents
(http://www.angelfire.com/band/theindependents) are manage by Joey Ramone
and will be touring this February with the Queers. That tour starts right
here at TT's in Cambridge on Friday, Feb 2nd.
The Ska.about site (http://www.ska.about.com) is always fresh and updated.
Site coordinator/guide Bob Timm recently added a review of a recent
Wailers/Scofflaws show which pondered the existence of these bands who have
little relationship to the bands in their heyday in terms of members and
creative input. Bob also has just added an interview with Phyllis Dillon,
the legendary rocksteady vocalist for much to the Duke Reid Treasure Isle
recording studio.
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra's label, Justa Records/Avex, has recent
released "Ska Stock, a Tribute to the Skatalites" (AVCD-11868), that
features such premier Japanese ska and reggae acts as TSPO, Rude Bones,
Blue Beat Players, Dry & Heavy, Scaful King, Little Tempo and more covering
Skatalite tunes. Justa Records has also issued five compilations featuring
original sixties Jamaican musicians in its "Jamaican Good Good Oldies"
series: "Killer Ska Instrumentals" (AVEX-11872), "Nice and Easy Rocksteady"
(AVCD-11873), "Skinhead Reggae" (AVCD-11874), "Wicked Ska Vocal"
(AVCD11885), and "Cover Ska Instrumental" (AVCD-11886). For detailed
information on all of these releases, check out TSPO's discography on the
Avex site: http://www.avexnet.or.jp/avexdb/skapara/disco.htm . For fans
outside of Japan, a good way to obtain these releases is through MUNDO (an
excellent and reliable Japanese mail-order service):

++++++++++++++ Recycled News +++++++++++++
Well, we knew this would happen. The Dave Wakeling show at the Paradise
this Sunday (Jan 21st) is sold out! Perhaps you caught the great interview
Dave did w/ Generoso on WMBR Tuesday night where he talked for about half
and hour about his band, the formation of the Beat, as well as requesting a
song which you could hear Dave sing along with. Opening up this show is
local band Steady Earnest. Steady has been relatively quiet since the
releases of MASH IT UP 2000 last spring due to the members busy schedules.
I've heard that Steady may be doing a few more shows in the next couple of
months though, which is a good thing. I'll keep you posted.
Boston's own Mass Hysteria will going into the studio at audemars piguet replica MIT to record some
tracks at their live studio with Generoso from the "Bovine Ska and
Rocksteady" radio show on WMBR (88.1FM or http://www.wmbr.org) every
Tuesday night starting at Midnight. The result should be an album with a
real 60's Ska/Rocksteady feel. They are planning to go in the end of
January so we are hoping to hear some results soon after that. In
addition, they will be doing some more 70's style roots reggae tracks at a
more advanced studio after that.
Boston's own 5 Bucks! and Mission 120 are releasing a limited edition
punk/ska split 7" on High Score Records called "Going Steady" which will be
on red vinyl. These copies will be available ONLY at these release shows
in February including Nashua, NH on Feb 10th and Gloucester on Feb 16th
(see dates below). One of the new songs that 5 Bucks! is putting on the 7"
is "Vicki" and it is available for listening at http://www.mp3.com/5bucks.
That song is produced by Marc Flynn of Big D, who also performs on the track.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (or CBC) has uploaded a Kingpins
video files recorded live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto last year.
Although the band admits that "it doesn't look or sound fantastic," it's
fun to watch! The song is a version of MATA HARI we started doing after
Paddy left the band and JFK took over as frontman. This track will likely
not be released anywhere else. There are also a couple of audio tracks
that'll give you a bit of an idea of the vibe that night. Click here to

mention an interveiw with Asian Man Records and information/articles on
many bands including: The Porkers, The Riffs, Bluekilla, Dave and Ansel
Collins, Freetown, Orangetree, Catch 22, 7 Wonders of the World (label),
